The Home Orchards Approach
Useful trees have to fit the property, the purpose, and the amount of care you want to give them. Just as important, they should be trees you are excited to have. We start with what you want, then use our experience to help shape a planting that fits the site and gives the trees a strong start.

A tree you want and will enjoy, chosen with the site, purpose, and Central Pennsylvania conditions in mind.
Enough room, light, drainage, and space for the tree to grow.
Correct depth, roots, mulch, staking, and support from the beginning.
Deer and other predictable risks addressed before they become a problem.
Clear, realistic expectations about growth, care, and harvest.
A planting that matches how hands-on or hands-off you want to be.
Annville, Pennsylvania
This Annville property started with plenty of open grass. We planted six sour cherry trees along the road and driveway, added a separate six-tree orchard with apples, pears, and peaches, and built a thornless raspberry trellis beside the house. Blueberries and kiwi berries were planned as future additions.
Twelve fruit trees total, plus a thornless red raspberry trellis beside the house.

From Your Idea to Planting
Every project starts with a conversation about your property and the trees or planting you have in mind. From there, we help you plan the details and carry the project through planting day.

Share what you would like from the space, the trees or plantings you have in mind, and anything important about the property.
We’ll ask a few useful questions, answer yours about the project, and help clarify the direction.
We look at the site with you, answer your questions about the project, and shape a plan around your goals and the property. Then we prepare a clear proposal.
Once the plan is approved and the project is reserved, we schedule the work and install the planting for a strong start.
Planting dates depend on season, route, and tree availability. Before the project is scheduled, we’ll make sure you know what is included and what to expect.
Customer Experience
Home Orchards is the best, period. They're dedicated, they're experts in local crops, and they're very approachable for a novice. Home Orchards helped with the entire process, and taught us along the way! Highly recommend.

Awesome experience! Very responsive, very knowledgeable, easy to work with. While I could’ve tried to plant fruit trees on my own, I’d rather spend a little more and give them much better chance of actually producing fruit. And after learning just a little bit about fruit trees, I’m sure if I would’ve done it myself they would have died. I would highly recommend Kalan.

Kalan Schlegel is incredible to work with. Kalan is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and easy to work with - and the full service he provides is incredible - everything from helping to select trees to putting up fences to protect the trees to teaching us how to care for them. Really top notch and we can't recommend him enough.

A separate, paid pathway
We also work with homeowners who already have fruit trees and need help deciding what to do next. A paid visit can help determine what is worth saving, what may need pruning, what should be replaced, and where better trees could be added.
Existing-tree visits follow a paid pathway. This route is separate from support for current Home Orchards clients.
